The One Where I Talk To Full-Time Nomad & Author, Kristy Halvorsen — Part 1

https://www.lucymeggeson.com/

This week’s episode is Part 1 of a 2-parter with the fabulous Kristy Halvorsen, a full-time nomad and author.

If “normal” is a way of being, Kristy is most definitely not that. In 2017, she sold pretty much everything she owned including her house, she left her career as a firefighting, and she hit the road in her Airstream trailer, Coddi. For nearly nine years, Kristy has migrated with the seasons, often with no idea where she’s headed next. As well as being a nomadic world traveler, she is a mentor, coach, and bestselling author of Perfect Unfolding: Seven Years of Life-Changing Solo Adventure, One Year That Broke Me Open, a vulnerable, deeply human account of what’s possible when you live in curiosity and wonder, embrace the unknown, and trust life while waking up to the simplicity and freedom available to us all. I’ve read the book and I honestly loved it and would highly recommend reading it — she writes beautifully and it’s an inspiring read.

This conversation was awesome, and in this first half, Kristy tells me all about what made her leave her career in firefighting to take off into the unknown; we talk about following your heart, we talk about heartbreak, and we talk about living the hell out of life.

Coddiwompling Into Freedom With Kristy Halvorsen

“What would you tell your 13-year-old self?” Give yourself a gift and watch this 40-second answer here.

Kristy Halvorsen’s story is a masterclass in personal growth through uncertainty. After a steady career in firefighting, she chooses solo travel and off-grid living in an Airstream, not as an escape but as a deliberate experiment in freedom. The episode lands on a simple, nerve-hitting idea: the life you fear might be the life that frees you. We talk about how fear often isn’t danger at all, it’s a mental movie of the future that scares us into staying small. For anyone craving a change, this conversation reframes risk as a doorway, not a warning sign.

She names her Airstream “Coddi” and defines “coddiwomple” as purposeful travel to unknown destinations, staying open to possibility, and refusing to overpredict the journey. That mindset becomes an intuition practice: follow the “tickles of the soul” instead of the endless shoulds, and let life surprise you with people, places, and unexpected belonging.

One of the most powerful teachings comes from a New Mexico sunset: a delayed hike turns into a breathtaking view, and gratitude cascades into a philosophy she calls the “perfect unfolding.” The point isn’t toxic positivity. It’s the ability to look back and see how heartbreak, detours, and uncomfortable timing can become the exact ingredients for a life you could not have planned. That theme carries into grief as Kristy talks about losing her mom just before her book launch, sensing her presence, and carrying wind chimes on the road as a daily reminder of love that doesn’t disappear.

The episode also explores resilience with teeth: a mountain bike wreck in Newfoundland, broken ribs, COVID turning into pneumonia, and a moment of real mortality while alone. Instead of pretending it’s easy, Kristy shares the raw truth and the strange clarity that arrives when you stop bargaining with life. We also dig into radical vulnerability in her memoir writing and the surprising reader response: when you tell the truth, you give other people permission to live theirs. If you’re searching for an adventure podcast that blends solo travel, grief, gratitude, and mindset, this conversation is a roadmap back to courage.

Kristy Halvorsen – Solo, but not alone

Kristy Halvorsen is a solo traveler whose journey has taken her across every state in the nation, nearly every Canadian province and into some of the most remote places in North America. She made an appearance earlier on this show in December 2022.

Kristy spent almost nine years living and traveling full time in a 28-foot Airstream and embracing a lifestyle she describes as “coddiwompling.” It is a term which means traveling without a fixed destination or detailed plan.

In this episode, Kristy shares stories from what she calls the most transformative year of her travels. It was a journey that inspired her book titled “Perfect Unfolding: Seven Years of Life-Changing Solo Adventure, One Year That Broke Me Open.”

Kristy discovered valuable lessons about resilience, trust and the kindness of strangers.

Kristy also talks about the realities of solo travel, what she has learned from nearly a decade on the road and why she believes some of life’s greatest adventures begin when we stop trying to control every detail.

Her stories remind us that the road is about much more than just destinations. It’s about the people we meet, the challenges we overcome and the personal growth that comes from stepping outside our comfort zones.

She also offered a refreshing reminder that independence does not mean doing everything alone. Instead, true freedom often comes from recognizing how interconnected we all are and why we must be willing to accept help when it arrives.

Live Without Limiting Beleifs

If you’re feeling the call to live and work in a way that feels lighter, freer, and more fully you, this episode will help you trust that voice–and start following it.

What if you let go of the fear of failure completely?
What if you trusted your inner knowing so deeply that any decision became the right one?
In this powerful conversation, Kristy Halvorsen offers a question that can change everything:
“What would you do if you knew it couldn’t go wrong?”
This simple but profound question invites you to explore a life where your desires lead–not your doubts.

Kristy shares how following these “tickles of the soul” led her to live as a global nomad, write a book, and build a life and business rooted in deep, joyful alignment.

A Home on the Move: Seven years of following the "tickles of the soul"

What if “home” wasn’t a place, but a way of being?

In this episode of Relocurious, we’re joined by Kristy Halvorsen, whose life challenges conventional ideas of relocation, relationships, and purpose.

After serious health wake-up calls as a firefighter-paramedic, Kristy let go of most of her belongings, hitched up an Airstream, and just got on the road. What began as an experiment in freedom became a way of life she calls coddiwompling — wandering with no destination.

Living off-grid and migrating with the seasons, Kristy carries her sense of home with her. She speaks candidly about loneliness, trust, saying goodbye, and staying open when nothing feels certain.

Kristy is the author of Perfect Unfolding, a reflective adventure memoir about a year that “broke her open” and reshaped how she lives. This conversation invites us to rethink what home can mean, and whether it might be something we carry, rather than somewhere we arrive.

Kristy shares how coddlewompling — traveling with purpose, without a plan — shaped her life on the road, her boondocking style, and the memoir born from those miles.

From meaningful detours to moments that cracked her wide open, this conversation is a reminder of how an Airstream can change your life when you loosen the itinerary and trust the unfolding.

EPISODE #116 Trusting the Unknown: Where Life Leads When We Let Go

What happens when we stop trying to control our lives and begin listening to the quiet nudges within? What becomes possible when we’re willing to step into the space where the known ends and life begins?

In this conversation, author and world traveler Kristy Halvorsen joins me from inside her Airstream, the home she’s lived in for the past eight years while following what she calls the “tickles of her soul.”

Kristy’s book, Perfect Unfolding, chronicles not just a physical journey across North America but an inner journey of awakening, surrender, and discovering a deeper connection to life.

We explore how aloneness began to fall away, what it means to trust the unknown, how to live from inner guidance rather than fear, and the quiet courage it takes to follow the path that calls to us, even when it makes no logical sense.

If you’ve been feeling a tug toward something new, a shift, a desire, or a possibility you can’t quite explain, this episode is an invitation to listen more closely. To trust the nudges. To take the next step without knowing the whole map. And to discover, as Kristy has, that life often leads us somewhere far more beautiful than anything we could have planned.
